Dairygold has today (Thursday, December 5), confirmed that the chair of Dairygold Co-op, Seán O’Brien will step down from his position at year end.

O’Brien will step down as he concludes his maximum permitted term of service in accordance with the society’s rules. An election will take place in the new year to appoint a new chair from the Dairygold board.

From Midleton, Co. Cork, O’Brien was elected to the Dairygold board in December 2020 and has been a member of the co-op’s East Cork Regional Committee since 2005 and the Dairygold General Committee since 2010.

He was announced the chair of Dairygold Co-op in January 2023, succeeding John O’Gorman who had served as chair for five years and had stepped down after having served the maximum term permitted on the board.

The news emerged following a Special General Meeting (SGM) where Dairygold members voted to adopt a number of rule amendments yesterday (Wednesday, December 4).

Agriland understands that the board of Dairygold will be allowed to “determine policy around the areas where milk can be supplied from” following the vote by Dairygold members yesterday.

Dairygold members voted by “significant majority” to adopt a number of rule amendments proposed by the society at the SGM in the Mallow GAA Sports Complex, Co. Cork.

This includes changes to milk supply provisions, which will remove “outdated milk quota language” from the rule book, and allow the board “to determine policy around the areas where milk can be supplied from”.

Agriland has asked Dairygold to outline whether there have been any changes made in relation to areas where milk can be supplied from, and what is meant by “outdated milk quota language”.
