A member of the Seanad is calling on the public to support the Irish horticulture sector this Christmas by buying Irish products.
Senator Victor Boyhan said that public support for the horticulture sector here will be “vital for its survival”.
He said Christmas is an important time for the horticulture sector particularly Irish grown produce and ornamental plants.
“I would encourage those considering purchasing horticulture gifts to buy Irish-grown produce, plants and nursery,” Boyhan said.
“Supporting the Irish horticulture sector will protect the industry and jobs.”
The independent senator welcomed the sources of funding that are available to support Ireland’s horticulture sector, saying these supports are “broadly in line” with the objectives set out in the National Strategy for Horticulture 2023 to 2027.
He said that the funding measures were “part of a suite of necessary measures needed to increase the horticultural food sector that is struggling to survive in terms of profitability”.
“Innovation and diversification schemes are critical to maximising efficiencies and increasing productivity in horticulture enterprises,” he said.
“The opening of these schemes provides opportunities for primary producers to secure the long-term viability of the Irish horticulture sector.
“Christmas is an important time for the horticulture sector, particularly ornamental house plants and Irish-grown food produce. I would encourage all to consider Irish-grown produce, plants and nursery stock. Supporting the Irish horticulture sector will support the sector and protect jobs,” Boyhan said.
There are currently three schemes open for applications in the horticulture sector.
These are:
- The 2025 Scheme for Innovation and Diversification in Horticulture (Feasibility/Desk Studies) is aimed at those who would like to innovate and diversify in the horticulture industry but need to carry out certain studies first;
- The 2025 Scheme for Innovation and Diversification in Horticulture (Capital Investments) aims to increase innovation and diversification in horticulture by grant aiding capital investments;
- The Scheme of Investment Aid for Process and Organisational Innovation in Horticulture for Large Enterprises, a new scheme for 2025, is aimed at assisting large enterprises to increase process and organisational innovation.
The deadline for receipt of completed applications under all three schemes is February 7.
