The Irish Cooperative Organisation Society (ICOS) is currently seeking to hire a new manager for Kingdom Co-op Mart in Tralee, Co. Kerry.

ICOS confirmed to Agriland that the former manager of the mart, Philip Healy, has stepped down to pursue other career interests.

“A recruitment process is underway to appoint a candidate to succeed him. Kingdom Co-operative Mart wishes Philip every success in the future,” a spokesperson for ICOS said.

ICOS

ICOS said that it is seeking to recruit “a commercially focused mart manager” to take overall responsibility for and lead the day-to-day management and development of Kingdom Co-op Mart.

The new manager will be tasked with promoting existing activities to ensure the mart maintain its current market position and expand its marketing of livestock.

ICOS said that candidates should be “strategic thinkers and excellent leaders”.

While hands-on management experience working within a mart or associated business is desirable, it is not essential.

Applicants should have knowledge and understanding of the livestock and agricultural industry and the ability to effectively lead and manage a team.

The closing date for applications for the position is 5:00p.m on Friday, January 10, 2025.

ICOS said that a “competitive remuneration package” is on offer for the right candidate.

Kingdom Co-op Mart is one of the longest established marts in the country having first opened its doors in 1958.

Mart

In other mart-related news, a final decision was made earlier this week for Mountrath Mart to be leased out.

Mountrath Co-Op Livestock Sales Ltd., in Co. Laois had been closed since January 2019, with many efforts this year towards re-opening the mart and resuming livestock sales.

Acting chair of Mountrath Mart, Ken Holmes said the support to keep it open “wasn’t there anymore” and that a final decision was made by the committee.

Holmes said that there is some repair work to be done and “the finance is just not there”.

He said that there is “definitely” a market there for another mart to do well in the area.

The mart has a total of four sales rings, seven lairages, over 125 cattle pens, 56 calf pens, and 10 loading bays. The mart is in possession of three weighing scales.

There is also 26.53ac of good quality land adjoining the mart, which can be leased with or without the premises.
