Independent Senator Victor Boyhan has called for the launch of a national forestry authority to “help restore farmers’ and foresters’ confidence” in the industry.

Senator Boyhan said that the formation of a new government “presents a new opportunity” which he said “needs to be seized”.

Senator Boyhan said: “At the moment, we have Coillte, a semi-state and the private sector working at a different pace and different supports to various degrees of success.

“Some countries have state authorities, such as the United States which has the Forest Service. A National Forestry Authority could also be responsible for regulations ensuring fair competition.”

According to the final forestry dashboard for 2024, 595 afforestation licenses were issued for the year with 4,844ha planted.

A total of 956 private felling licenses and 1,007 Coillte felling licenses were issued in 2024. A total of 840 road felling licenses were also issued.

Boyhan is calling for the forestry authority to be brought to action as part of the new government, which is expected to form by the end of the month.

Forestry authority

Senator Boyhan said that there should be “appropriate investment” in all areas and that the forestry sector provides a significant number of jobs and is worth over €2 billion.

He added that “further investment” is needed to ensure the “stability” of the rural community and rural economy.

“It is important that we restore confidence to the forestry sector. Many rural TDs and Senators understand the importance of this.

“I hope they will make a commitment to the forestry section by including the establishment of a national forestry authority in the upcoming programme for government,” the senator said.
