Met Éireann has said that weather conditions are due to become largely dry for the rest of the week and the weekend due to an area of high pressure.
The national forecaster added that temperatures are set to drop with frost expected in places at night.
Today (Tuesday, February 4) will begin wet in most parts of the country, which will gradually clear southeastwards by the early afternoon.
This will be followed by sunshine and showers, some of which will be heavy and of hail in the north and west.
Highest afternoon temperatures will reach 7° to 10°C, in fresh southerly winds which will become moderate to fresh, gusty southwesterly.
The showers will become isolated early tonight and confined to Atlantic coastal areas, elsewhere it will be mainly dry with clear spells.
Overnight temperatures will dip to between -1° to 3° with some frost and ice forming in light to moderate southwest breezes.
Weather
Wednesday will be a mainly dry day with good spells of sunshine and some light showers possible along western and northwestern coasts. Highest temperatures of 6° to 9° in mostly light southwesterly breezes.
It will be dry, clear and cold on Wednesday night with lowest temperatures of -2° to 2° with frost and icy patches and light southerly breezes.
Largely dry and sunny on Thursday, cloudier for a time in the southwest where there may be some patchy light rain or drizzle. Highest temperatures of 7° to 10° in moderate and occasionally fresh southeasterly winds.
Cold and dry on Thursday night with lowest temperatures of -2° to 2° bringing frost and some ice patches.
Friday will be another dry day with sunny spells and some cloudy periods. Highest temperatures of 6° to 8° in light to moderate southeasterly breezes.
There will be more frost and icy patches on Friday night as the mercury dips to between -3° to 1°.
The forecast shows that the weekend will be mainly dry and cold with a mixture of cloud and sunny spells, some drizzle in places.
The current indications show that the early part of next week will continue to be mainly dry and cold with light winds.
Met Éireann
Met Éireann said that overall rainfall is expected to be below normal over the coming week, with the highest accumulations in the east.
Mean air temperatures will drop to between 3° to 6° generally in the next seven days, which is 1° or 2° below normal.
Soil temperatures are around normal for this time of year, ranging between 4.4° and 7.3°, with little change expected this week.
Drying conditions will improve from Wednesday as conditions are expected to become more settled, while opportunities for spraying will also increase from Wednesday.
Met Éireann said that all soils are currently saturated with some moderately drained soils in the west and southwest and all poorly drained soils waterlogged.
As the weather becomes more settled, soil conditions are anticipated to improve slightly by the end of the week as moderately drained soils return to saturated. However, poorly drained soils will remain waterlogged.
