The first class of Kerry Dairy Ireland's new Level 7 certificate in sustainable dairy development have graduated from the course, according to the dairy processor.

This is the first year of the course, which was launched as a key initiative within the 2024 Evolve Dairy Sustainability Programme.

The 12-week programme was delivered in partnership with IRD Duhallow Skillnet and University College Cork (UCC).

It ran part-time from September to December 2024, with a variation of online and in-person classes.

The graduation took place at IRD Duhallow Skillnet campus in Newmarket, Co. Cork.

Participants of the course explored greenhouse gas emissions, soil science, water quality, biodiversity, renewable energy, grassland management and sustainable farm systems.

At the end of the programme, participants had to complete a portfolio of 2,500 words, explaining how and why they have applied their learning to their own farms.

Kerry Dairy Ireland, director of sustainability and agribusiness, James O'Connell, said: “We are delighted to see the first group of farmers graduate from this programme.

“Their dedication to continuous learning and environmental stewardship is a powerful reflection of the values at the heart of our Evolve strategy.”

IRD Duhallow Skillnet development officer, Monica Gilmore added: “This programme is a testament to what can be achieved when industry, academia, and government come together to support the agri-sector.

"We’re proud to continue supporting farmers in future-proofing their businesses.”
