The Trim Haymaking Festival, presented by Scurlogstown Olympiad, returns tomorrow (Sunday, June 15) to the historic Porchfields in Trim, Co Meath, marking a major milestone.
This will be the 25th edition of the festival that celebrates traditional haymaking, rural heritage, and community spirit.
Themed 'Making hay while the sun shines', the 2025 festival aims to be a memorable day of heritage displays, music, competitions, and family fun.
This year’s event is expected to attract families, international visitors, and heritage enthusiasts from across Ireland and beyond.
Headline attractions will include a massive haymaking display by Clady Vintage Club and The Donkey Breed Society, Northern Ireland.
There will be vintage machinery exhibitions from Clady and other vintage groups, and a vintage implement showcase by Benny Cusack.
In addition, Trim Comhaltas musicians will welcome visitors with traditional music at the Sheep’s Gate, setting the tone for the day, and there will be live traditional music from Eddie Quinn and Dessie Hynes and the Annaly Céilí Band.
Chris Hayes from Wexford will give a demonstration and talk on scything, as well as competing in the scythe cutting competition.
Meanwhile, a sheaf-tossing competition will feature the world record holder, Michael O’Brien.
There will also be a straw-hat-making demonstration by Monica Fleming, showcasing a tradition linked with the iconic Wren Boys.
The Donegal Thatching School, which focuses on preserving this endangered skill, will be present on the day to demonstrate this ancient craft.
Anna Ní Dhonnchú, a certified handweaver from Breidín na Bóinne (Boyne Valley Tweed) will be weaving live and discuss the heritage of handweaving in Ireland.
Family-friendly features include an autism-friendly area hosted by Trim Autism-Friendly Town. Dog lovers at the festival will have the opportunity to meet Dún na gCon’s Irish wolfhounds, Darach and Fraoch.
Members of Meath Community Safety Partnership and An Garda Síochána will speak about community safety, while the gardaí will demonstrate their property marking machine.
Anyone4Science will run a free kite-making workshop from 12:00pm to 4:00pm, dubbed by the organisers as 'perfect for kids of all ages.'
The organising committee invites everyone to join them in celebrating a quarter-century of haymaking heritage "where tradition, music, learning, and community come together in one unforgettable day".
