94% of Limousin breeders use Euro-Star indices in catalogue

The Irish Limousin Cattle Society has published the catalogue for its first society show and sale of 2025, which sees 94% or 33 of the 35 pedigree Limousin cattle breeders exhibiting bulls in the sale seeking to include the Irish Cattle Breeding Federation (ICBF) Euro-Star indices.

This is despite the fact that only last month, the Irish Limousin Cattle Society confirmed that it "will be requesting ICBF to remove the genetic evaluation of all registered animals in our herd book".

Following this decision from the cattle breed society, a number of pedigree Limousin cattle breeders contacted Agriland to voice their frustration at the move by the breed society.

The following week on February 18, the society issued an e-mail to Limousin breeders exhibiting bulls in the Roscrea Premier Sale.

The e-mail said: "The Limousin Society are surveying the owners of bulls entered in the Roscrea Premier Sale to get your opinions regarding the information you wish to appear for your bull(s) on the sales catalogue."

Breeders were given just over 24 hours to select one of the following two options:

  • Option 1: The usual catalogue format that includes the ICBF data;
  • Option 2: Does not include ICBF data.

This survey was conducted after the society disclosed it would be requesting ICBF to “remove the genetic evaluation of all registered animals” in its herd book.

Of the 64 bulls catalogued for the sale, 61 of these have their Euro-Star evaluations included in the catalogue, with only two of the 35 exhibitors opting not to include their bulls' star ratings.

The show and sale takes place at Roscrea Mart in Co. Tipperary on Saturday, March 22. The show will commence at 9:00a.m and the sale is set to commence at 12:00 mid-day.

All bulls included in the sale are export tested and fertility tested, according to the society.
