Cavan breeder secures €9,000 for Angus bull at Carrick sale

A cattle breeder from Co. Cavan secured the top price of €9,000 at the February Show and Sale of Pedigree Bulls and Heifers at the Showgrounds, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Roscommon on Saturday, February 8.

The event went ahead "very successfully" despite extensive damage caused to the offices and sales ring by Storm Éowyn, according to a statement from the Midland and Western Livestock Improvement Society.

Before the sale commenced, auctioneer Francis McGowan acknowledged all those who assisted in the sale preparations, which included the assembly of a new temporary sales ring in the judging arena that was constructed in a matter of days.

Three animals from the sale went to Northern Ireland purchasers and one to a customer in Great Britain.

There were a total of 24 Angus bulls on offer at the multi-breed sale, with 19 of these selling at an average of €4,200.

It was Shane McKiernan from Ballinagh, Co. Cavan who achieved the top price of €9,000 for his August 2023-born entry Drumcarbin Wan Basaka. This bull was sired by Loughglynn Hum Dinger.

The Champion Angus Bull on the day was Loughglynn Whacker, sired by Hf Rebel 53y and bred by Patrick Regan from Claremorris, Co. Mayo, which sold for €6,100.

The Reserve Angus Champion Shankill Lord Hewick, sired by Lavally Ultra, sold for €5,100 from the fold of Finbarr Cahill from Shankill, Co. Cavan.

Other top prices for Angus Bulls were as follows :

  • €6,500 for Liscolvin Wayne sired by Prohurst EoghanW759 and bred by Martin Garvey from Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim;
  • €4,300 for both Calury Whizkid, sired by Netherton Americano, and Laheens Will Et, a son of Hf Rebel 53y bred by Anselm Fitzgerald from Moate, Co. Westmeath and Cathal Duignan, from Carrick on Shannon, Co. Leitrim respectively;
  • €4,200 for Kerins Willpower, sired by Stouphill Bomber and bred by Bernard Kerins from Ballymote, Co. Sligo;
  • €4,100 for Drumcrow Prophecy sired by Hw Abacus V500 and bred by Nevan McKiernan from Ballinagh, Co. Cavan.

The three Angus heifers on offer sold with Drumbeera Biddy, a daughter of Caulry Nationwide and bred by Thomas F. Beirne from Gorvagh, Co. Leitrim, making €4,000.

Two Angus heifers exhibited by Shane McGreal from Claremorris, Co. Mayo made €2,600 and €2,000 respectively. Cloonhill Winnie and Cloonhill Wilma are both progeny of Cloonderry Rex.

Ballinamore, Co. Leitrim-based breeder Noel Bohan sold his Shorthorn Bull Drumrane Elmo, sired by Rathglass Prince, for €2,200.

The two Hereford Bulls present also sold, with €3,400 realised for Toomapoll 1 Pimblett, sired by Goulding 1 Superduty and bred by Martin Tierney from Cloone, Co. Leitrim. Duighgiolla Super, sired by Trillick George and bred by Kevin and Monica Diffley from Co. Longford, fetched €2,900.

There were eight Charolais bulls present on the day, with three of these selling.

Taking the top price of €3,100 in the Charolais offering was Scregg Umar, sired by Cavelands Fenian and bred by Michael J. Brehony from Co. Roscommon.

John and Dessie Morrow from Co. Leitrim secured €3,000 for Fortview Ulyss sired by Derryolam Matt and Paddy Kilrane from Mohill, Co. Leitrim secured €2,900 for Tulcon Useful sired by Fiston.
