The chair of the Irish Farmers’ Association (IFA) in Cavan, Maurice Brady, has announced his intention to run for the role of Ulster/North Leinster regional chairperson.

Brady made the announcement at the Cavan IFA Annual General Meeting (AGM) which took place at the Lavey Inn, Co. Cavan, last night (Monday, January 20).

The role is currently held by Co. Monaghan-based pig farmer Frank Brady who will leave the position when his term is completed at the end of this year.

The elections are due to be held in December this year.

Maurice Brady is the first candidate to announce his intention to run for the role and it remains to be seen if another candidate will step forward to run.

Speaking at the AGM, the Cavan IFA chair said: “This is my last year as county chairman, I hope I can still make a contribution to IFA after my term is up.

“Therefore I want to let you all know that I will be putting my name forward to contest the Ulster/North Leinster regional chairman position later this year.

“I want to thank the current chair Frank Brady, who is no relation by the way, for all his efforts”.

The guest speaker on the night was IFA national president Francie Gorman who discussed some of the key issues currently facing farmers and the work the association is doing to address these challenges.

There were two roles to be filled at last night’s meeting; county president and farm family committee representative.

IFA stalwart Sean Denning from the Billis branch took up the role of president replacing the late Seamus Reilly.

Helen Clarke from the Crossdoney branch took the role of IFA Farm Family Committee representative, replacing Elizabeth Tilson who has completed her term in the role.

John McCaffery from Redhills was awarded an honorary life membership of the organisation on the night by the county chair, Maurice Brady.
