A Co. Mayo suckler farmer has died in a incident involving an ATV which occurred in the Tavrane area, near Kilkelly, yesterday evening (Wednesday, August 6).
An Garda Síochana said: "Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of a fatal incident at residential premises in Kilkelly, Co. Mayo on the afternoon of Wednesday August 6, 2025.
"A man was pronounced deceased by paramedics at the scene."
The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) has confirmed to Agriland that it is aware of the fatal incident and an investigation has been launched.
Agriland understands that the victim was a well known member of the local community, which has been left shocked and saddened by the farmer's tragic death.
Gardaí have said there is no further information available at this time.
Separately, a pensioner has died in a house fire at a rural location in Co. Tipperary.
An Garda Síochana and emergency services attended the scene of the fatal fire at Boherlahan, Cashel, Co. Tipperary yesterday (August 6).
An Garda Síochana said: "A man in his 70s, the sole occupant of the house, was pronounced dead at the scene.
"Fire services extinguished the fire. A post-mortem examination is to be arranged for the deceased, and the local coroner has been notified."
Agriland understands that the man who died has been named locally as Michael Looby, who was a member of Clonoulty Rossmore Vintage Club and Dualla Ploughing Association.
Locals have said Michael Looby was a "force of nature".
One source told Agriland that Looby was very interested in vintage machinery, owning vintage Massey Ferguson 135 and 148 tractors.
He also had a threshing mill and baler, and would bale hay and straw for people in the local area.
