CSO: Excise clearances of green diesel were higher in February

Excise clearances of green diesel was 10% higher in February this year compared with the same month a year ago, according to new figures today (Thursday, April 24) from the Central Statistics Office (CSO).

Excise clearances of green diesel, also known as marked gas oil, in February 2025, totaled 88 million litres compared with the February 2024 figure of 80 million.

According to the CSO over the period January to February 2025 excise clearances of green diesel, which is mainly used for agriculture and the heating of larger buildings, increased by 1.7%.

The latest figures are based on statistics collected by Revenue Commissioners on the volumes of fuel clearances covered by excise taxes and generally, fuel excise clearance figures indicate the level of sales of each fuel.

In general excise clearances of autodiesel in February 2025 were 4% lower at 271 million litres than the February 2024 figure of 281 million litres.

According to Deirdre Moran, statistician in the CSO Climate and Energy Division, they were also 3% lower when compared with the 12-month rolling period of March 2024 to February 2025 and March 2023 to February 2024.

"Excise clearances of unleaded petrol in February 2025, at 81 million litres, were 3% higher than the February 2024 figure of 79 million litres.

"This was the highest volume of unleaded petrol clearances recorded for the month of February since 2018.

"Unleaded Petrol clearances were 1% higher in the first two months of 2025 compared with the same period in 2024. They were 4% higher when comparing the 12-month rolling period of March 2024-February 2025 with March 2023-February 2024," Moran added.

The latest CSO data also highlights that wholesale prices of autodiesel in February 2025 were slightly lower than February 2024, while wholesale prices of unleaded petrol in February 2025 were higher than February 2024.

Separately today's report shows that excise clearances of Kerosene in February 2025 stood at 103 million litres which was 8% higher compared with the February 2024 figure of 95 million litres.

Meanwhile analysis by the CSO shows that last year autodiesel excise clearances were 3.5 billion litres - which was 78% higher than the 2000 autodiesel clearances figure of 2 billion litres.

In 2024 unleaded petrol excise clearances were 1.1 billion litres which was also 45% lower than the 2000 unleaded petrol clearances figure of 2 billion litres.
