CSO: New tractor registrations drop 8% in year to February

231 new tractors were licensed for the first time in February, according to the Central Statistics Office (CSO).

This represents a decline of 8% or 19 units when compared with the same month last year when the figure stood at 250 tractors.

The latest data published today (Tuesday, March 25) shows that 466 new tractors were licensed in the first two months of the year.

The CSO said that this is down by 10% or 50 units on the 516 new tractors registered for the first time in the same period in 2024.

When it comes to used (imported) tractors, 215 units were licensed for the first time in February, which is similar to a year previously (216).

During January and February 2025, 370 used tractors were registered, down 1% on the corresponding timeframe last year (372 units).

The CSO data also shows that the total number of new private cars licensed in February 2025 (14,394) grew slightly in comparison with the same period in 2024 (13,979).

The number of used (imported) cars licensed increased by 9% to 5,454 compared to February 2024.

The number of new electric vehicles (EVs) licensed in February rose by 38% to 2,853.

This means the share of EVs among new private cars increased to 20% in February compared with 15% in the same month in 2024.

There was also growth in the licensing of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) which were up 65% from 1,321 in February of 2024 to 2,179 vehicles in the same period of 2025.

In the first two months of 2025, 9,593 new cars licensed were petrol compared with 10,121 in the same period of 2024, a fall of 5%. The number of new diesel cars licensed fell by 22% to 6,079.

There were 1,450 used (imported) diesel private cars licensed in February 2025, compared with 1,388 in the same period of 2024, an increase of 4%.

Toyota was the most popular make of new private car licensed in February 2025 at 2,024 vehicles, followed by Hyundai (1,481), Volkswagen (1,363), Kia (1,323), and Skoda (1,083).

The most popular brand of new electric car licensed in February 2025 was Tesla Model 3 (313), followed by Volkswagen ID.4 (248), and Kia EV 3 (192).
