A driver towing a trailer in Co. Donegal may be faced with a court appearance following a stop conducted by gardaí this week for a number of road offenses.
Buncrana roads policing unit (RPU) stopped the car with a trailer on Wednesday, October 2 to discover that the two front tyres of the car were excessively worn and it did not have a valid NCT (national car test).
There were no lights on the trailer and gardaí stated it was starting to get dark at the time.
Gardaí confirmed the driver was not allowed to continue onwards on their journey with the trailer attached and it was removed from the road as it was deemed “unsafe” by the Buncrana RPU.
Fixed charge penalty notices will be issued and a court appearance may follow, a social media post from an Garda Síochána Donegal stated.
Gardaí have asked motorists to check their tyres regularly and even more regularly when the tread depth reaches 3mm. The legal minimum tread depth is 1.6mm.
An Garda Síochána Donegal said: “The more worn your tyres become, the less grip they will have on the road surface.
“Motorists, please ensure that the lights on your car, motorcycle, tractor, van etc. are all in good working order.
“For those who have trailers, please ensure that the lights and reflectors are all in place and that they are in good working condition,” gardaí added.
Trailer licenses
Two drivers without the correct licenses for towing trailers will face a court appearance, according to Kilkenny gardaí.
The Kilkenny roads policing unit intercepted two drivers on Friday, September 27 who “weren’t allowed continue their journey as they were not properly licensed,” gardaí stated on social media.
Gardaí added that: “When you’re not licensed to tow, you’re not properly insured.”
The stops were conducted upon the two vehicles towing the trailer and the horsebox below:
Gardaí clarified that a court appearance is to follow for the drivers.
