The European Union will send 17 generators to Ireland following a request for assistance relating to power outages caused by storm damage in recent days.

The EU has immediately mobilised 13 power generators from the commission's own strategic reserve, rescEU, hosted in Poland.

Four power generators offered by Denmark via the EU's Civil Protection Mechanism will also soon reach Ireland and help provide electricity on the ground.

The EU also activated the Copernicus Emergency Management Service and has provided analytical support to the national authorities.

The EU's Emergency Response Coordination Centre is continuing to monitor the situation and remains in constant contact with the national authorities, ensuring that additional assistance can be promptly channelled if needed.

To support ESB Networks and partner contactors in their restoration efforts, skilled technicians from counterparts in Great Britain have been deployed to the worst impacted areas.

Support is set to arrive in Ireland from electricity network operators over the coming days from Austria, Finland, Netherlands and France.

ESB crews from the south and east of the country are also being redeployed to the worst impacted areas once restoration in their areas has been completed, while skilled retirees from ESB Networks are also being redrafted to assist.

EU Commissioner for Preparedness, Crisis Management and Equality, Hadja Lahbib, said: “Extreme weather events, like storm Éowyn, increasingly put Europe's disaster resilience to the test. But they also demonstrate the growing strength of our joint preparedness and solidarity efforts."

"I thank Denmark for their prompt offer of assistance, and Poland for their excellent collaboration in hosting and delivering the rescEU power generators to Ireland. We are in this together," Commissioner Lahbib said.

The most recent data from ESB Networks shows that 204,000 customers remain without supply. It is expected that approximately 100,000 customers will progressively have their supply restored following January 31.
