Longford County Council is hosting a free nature summer school next week for children aged 8-12 years.
The school will take place in Abbeyshrule, from Tuesday, August 5 to Friday, August 8,
Young explorers will discover the remarkable ecosystem and biodiversity thriving in Co. Longford, learning about diverse habitats including peatlands, woodlands, farms, hedgerows, and waterbodies alongside the plants and animals that inhabit them.
The Yard Hub in Abbeyshrule will host the educational adventure from 10:00am to 2:00pm each day.
Expert-led sessions will feature field trips to Corlea trackway and Newcastle Wood, with specialists from Biodiversity in Schools; Coillte; the National Park and Wildlife Service (NPWS); the Office of Public Works (OPW), and Longford County Council sharing their knowledge.
The summer school is a joint initiative between Longford Library Services and the environment section of Longford County Council.
Longford country council chief executive, Paddy Mahon, emphasised the programme's significance.
He said: "This nature summer school represents our commitment to nurturing the next generation of environmental guardians.
"When children understand the rich biodiversity of life and nature surrounding them, they develop a genuine connection to their natural heritage that lasts a lifetime."
Cathaoirleach of Longford County Council, Cllr Garry Murtagh, highlighted the practical benefits.
"Every child who participates in this free nature summer school becomes an ambassador for conservation in their own community," he said.
"They return home with fresh eyes, spotting wildlife they never noticed before and sharing their enthusiasm with family and friends. This ripple effect strengthens our entire county's relationship with nature."
Biodiversity in Schools staff will guide participants through hands-on learning experiences, culminating in a presentation lunch on Friday where students receive certificates acknowledging their achievements.
Parents seeking registration forms should contact Ballymahon Library immediately, as places are strictly limited, and all participants must register in advance.
The Longford Biodiversity Summer School receives funding from the NPWS and Longford County Council through the Local Biodiversity Action Fund 2025.
