An Garda Síochána has issued a reminder to the public to beware and report any potential bogus callers after receiving reports of suspicious activity in Abbeyleix, Co. Laois.
Gardaí were made aware of a black Volkswagen Golf with UK registration plates calling to homes and businesses in the area offering tarmac, roofing, and other services. The car had a beacon on the roof and a sticker/decal on the driver's front door.
The vehicle was stopped by gardaí and the occupants were "dealt with appropriately" shortly after reports were received, due to help from the public.
On social media, the gardaí have said that anyone can receive visits from bogus callers and that older people are frequently targeted.
Common phrases used by the callers to enter the home includes the following: “There’s been an accident, can I call an ambulance?”; “I’ve broken down, can I use your phone?”; or “I’ve had a fall, could I have a glass of water”.
There are also cases were callers purport to be members of the county council or members of An Garda Síochána that are investigating counterfeit money. They may also offer services such as powerwashing, painting, selling goods, etc.
"Some will keep you talking at the front door while their accomplice sneaks in the back door. In all cases you need to be wary of strangers calling to your home," An Garda Síochána stated.

Gardaí stated that these callers "can be intimidating" and refuse to take no for an answer. The common phrase they use is: "Remember if in doubt, keep them out".
Anyone who comes across suspicious persons/vehicles have been asked to report incidents immediately and to pass the key advice on to other homeowners.
