Gardaí have confirmed to Agriland that several cattle were injured after a livestock lorry overturned earlier today (Tuesday, October 29) in Co. Meath.
The single vehicle incident is understood to have happened on the N3 road at the Derver roundabout, close to the border with Co. Cavan, at around 8:30a.m this morning.
Gardaí and other members of the emergency services attended the scene, which included officers from counties Meath and Cavan.
The driver of the truck escaped injury in the incident, however a number of animals were injured.
The road was closed to traffic for several hours with local diversions put in place for motorists.
A garda spokesperson confirmed to Agriland that the scene has now been cleared and the road is fully reopened to traffic.
Separately, the Road Safety Authority (RSA) has urged all motorists to prepare their vehicle for the challenges of driving in the winter months.
To ensure that a vehicle is “winter ready”, the authority has offered the following advice to motorists:
- Get your vehicle serviced to make sure it is fit and safe for winter driving. You should also carry out regular walkaround checks on the vehicle;
- Check for wear and tear on wiper blades and replace them as soon as they start to smear rather than clean windows;
- Keep tyre pressure at the manufacturer’s recommended level and check you have at least three millimetres of tread depth;
- Check that your spare wheel is in good condition and is fully inflated. Some cars may have an inflation repair kit instead of a spare wheel. Make sure that you know how to use it;
- Make sure all vehicle lights are working and clean;
- Top up with anti-freeze and screen wash.
