Gardaí urge public to report sightings of out-of-control dogs

As lambing season gets underway, gardaí have issued an appeal to the public to report sightings of out-of-control dogs.

The Laois/Offaly and Cavan/Monaghan garda divisions noted that at this time of year it is more important than ever to ensure that dogs are kept under control to prevent sheep worrying.

"Sheep worrying isn’t just chasing – it’s the stress, injury, or even death of sheep caused by loose or out-of-control dogs.

"A single attack can devastate a flock, causing ewes to miscarry and leaving lambs orphaned," the social media posts stated.

Gardaí said that even the presence of a loose dog near livestock can cause distress, injury, and financial loss to farmers.

They noted that dog owners can face criminal prosecution and financial liability if their pet harms livestock.

Dog owners are asked to always keep their pet on a lead and under control near farmland.

Gardaí also appealed to owners to ensure their gardens are secure to prevent the dog from escaping, particularly at night.

They added that the public should report any sightings of out-of-control dogs to their local garda station or dog warden.

"Farmers work tirelessly to protect their animals – let’s support them by keeping dogs under control. Together, we can prevent avoidable suffering for both farmers and animals," the post added.

Meanwhile, a new campaign is set to be launched to “reinforce responsible dog ownership from the perspective of harm to both humans and other animals".

Minister for Rural and Community Development Dara Calleary said that last year a major national awareness campaign was launched by the department to “alert dog owners of their responsibilities and to raise awareness of the dangers that can be posed to people and to livestock by uncontrolled dogs”.

He confirmed that his department now intends to launch a similar campaign in the coming weeks.
