High supermoon spring tides may lead to a weekend of 'impactful' weather

Met Éireann has issued an advisory of "exceptionally high" supermoon spring tides with coastal flooding possible, which may lead to a weekend of "impactful" weather.

From tomorrow (Friday, October 18), a brief period of heavy rain and strong winds across the country is expected.

Met Éireann warned that wind warnings will then be expected to commence from Saturday night and into Sunday.

The national forecaster is also monitoring another low-pressure system which could undergo rapid deepening on Saturday with the potential for strong winds and potentially a named storm; however, uncertainty still exists about this event.

Additionally, the country is currently in one of the highest spring tides of the year and this, tied in with any strong winds and high waves, will increase the risk of coastal flooding.

These exceptionally high spring tides are due to the current proximity of the moon to the earth leading to an increased gravitational pull.

Met Éireann meteorologist, Liz Walsh said: “There is still a lot of uncertainty in the details at this time, but the potential is there for strong winds and therefore a named storm on Saturday night into Sunday”.

During the next seven days, rainfall amounts will be above average in parts of the west and northwest, with near average amounts expected elsewhere.

A total of 30-50mm is expected in the rain forecast for the west and northwest of the country, with 10-30mm expected elsewhere.
