The inaugural Mick Murray road run is taking place today (Sunday, March 16) in Ballyroan, Co. Laois.
It is expected to be the biggest road run ever in the village. The late Mick was the driving force in bringing the national vintage rally to Ballyroan in 2000.
"Mick Murray was deeply embedded in the fabric of Ballyroan. He loved anything and everything vintage and was a founding member of Ballyroan Vintage Club, established in typical Irish style around the kitchen table," said Tony Mulhall, one of the organising committee members who are working with the family in running the event.
"He was also a former chairman and president of Colt GAA. For years he organised a parade through the village on St Patrick's Day," he said.
The late Mick Murray also organised an annual tractor run, with the proceeds going to the Friends of Abbeyleix Hospital, a favourite cause of Mick's.
Known as a great character with a twinkle in his eye, he was involved in a whole range of community activities and events. His keen sense of humour and larger than life personality endeared him to all age groups.
"Sadly, Mick passed away unexpectedly on St. Patrick's Day 2019. Ironically St. Patrick's Day was his favourite day. Mick was predeceased by his lovely wife, Bridgie, on September 24, 2016. Losing Mick was a huge loss to the village but for his five daughters, Breda, Cathy, Carmel, Lorraine, and Michelle and their families, it was devastating," Mulhall said.
"They will ensure that all proceeds from this run which is open to all types of tractors, cars, lorries, and motorcycles, will go to the same worthy cause. The Buggie School of Dancing members will showcase their skills during registration which will take place at noon in the old boys' school, Ballyroan.
"The entry fee is €20 per vehicle. Refreshments will be served. Rounding off the day will be be music in Scully's Skies O'er from 9:00p.m and a raffle with valuable prizes," he added.
