Leitrim ploughing match postponed following local tragedy

Co. Leitrim Ploughing Association has decided to postpone its annual ploughing match, following a local tragedy in the area this week.

The 68th annual ploughing championships, that was meant to take place on Saturday, April 19 will now be held on Sunday, April 27.

The decision was made out of respect for the death of teenager Dessie O’Kelly. The teenager died when the tractor he was a passenger in collided in Carrigallen, Co. Leitrim on Tuesday, April 15.

Meanwhile, the ploughing will go ahead as usual the following Sunday instead on the land of Michael Flanagan, Garadice, Aughawillan, Balinamore, Co. Leitrim.

Ploughing classes will take place, as well as a new "classic" ploughing class, along with many different trade and entertainment stands.

Leitrim Ploughing Association has extended its condolences following the tragedy to the family in a social media post:

"Due to a tragic event that has taken place in the locality, Leitrim Ploughing association has decided to postpone our ploughing match until Sunday the 27th of April. Thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time."

Meanwhile, gardaí have renewed their appeal for information from the public following a fatal crash involving a car and a ride-on lawnmower.

The fatal collision happened on the N76 at Kilcash Cross, Co. Tipperary at approximately 9:45p.m on Friday (April 11).

A man, aged in his 30s, travelling on the ride-on lawnmower, was later pronounced deceased at the scene.

Gardaí said that there were no other injuries reported as a result of the incident.
