Lidl Ireland has signed a new supply deal with Monaghan-based, McCaghey Turkeys, which will see its fresh and pre-prepared Irish turkeys stocked in all of Lidl’s 223 stores across the island of Ireland.

Founded in 1951 at Broomfield, Castleblayney in County Monaghan, McCaghey Turkeys is one of the largest family-owned turkey processors in the country and offers a range of fresh turkey products.

The company, which employs 150 people, is a long-standing partner of Lidl Ireland and has been one of the group’s suppliers since 2009.

Over the past, five years Lidl have grown their McCaghey’s seasonal range of turkey products from 14 to 22 this year.

Lidl Ireland has estimated that shoppers could purchase more than 90,000 turkeys this Christmas.

According to Pat McCaghey from McCaghey Turkeys said the family business has now been operating three generations.

“We’re very proud to have grown the business from a farm of just nine birds to becoming Ireland’s largest family-owned turkey processor.

“What has remained from day one is our commitment to guaranteeing the finest and freshest poultry products and we know that when it comes to quality and taste, we offer the best of the best.

“It’s an enormous privilege to farm and supply Christmas turkeys which we know are enjoyed by thousands of families across Ireland every year,” he said.

Meanwhile Robert Hatton, buying director at Lidl Ireland and Northern Ireland said the group is “dedicated to supporting local suppliers”.

Hatton said that the latest supply deal with McCaghey Turkeys reflects its commitment to provide “the very highest quality Irish produce to our customers at market leading value”.

“We’ve seen serious demand for our turkeys, including a real surge in shoppers opting for smaller turkey joints which are more convenient to cook with minimal preparation time.

“This year will be no exception and we predict to sell over 90,000 turkeys before Christmas Day,” he added.

Earlier this year, Lidl Ireland released its latest Supplier and Business Partner Impact Report which found that more than €1.6 billion worth of goods and services was purchased from Irish suppliers and business partners in 2023.

A total of €1.1 billion worth of goods was purchased from the Irish agri-food industry, with €800 million staying within Lidl Ireland’s operations to be sold through its local store network while more than €300 million was also exported internationally through Lidl’s network of stores.
