Macra election hustings to kick off tonight

Macra has announced the details of the hustings which will take place across the country ahead of the organisation's upcoming election.

The hustings will allow Macra members to hear from the candidates running for the positions of president and Munster vice-president.

The debates will allow the candidates to share their vision for the future of the farm organisation and answer questions from members.

In total, Macra is planning to hold six election hustings at locations across the country.

The first event will take place tonight (Monday, March 10) in Adare, Co. Limerick with the final hustings to take place in Co. Carlow on Thursday, March 27.

The full list of Macra election hustings, all of which begin at 7:30p.m, is as follows:

  • Monday, March 10: Woodlands House Hotel, Adare, Co. Limerick;
  • Tuesday, March 18: Cavan Crystal Hotel, Dublin Road, Co. Cavan;
  • Wednesday, March 19: Glenroyal Hotel and Leisure Club, Maynooth, Co. Kildare;
  • Monday, March 24: Abbey Hotel, Galway Road, Co. Roscommon;
  • Wednesday, March 26: Radisson Blu Hotel and Spa, Little Island, Co. Cork;
  • Thursday, March 27: Lord Bagenal Inn, Leighlinbridge, Co. Carlow.

Last week, Elaine Houlihan, returning officer for the Macra national election, announced the candidates that would be running following the close of nominations.

There are two candidates in the presidential race: Josephine O’Neill, Callan Macra, Co. Kilkenny and Conor Murphy, Whitechurch Macra, Co. Cork.

The Munster vice-presidential candidates are William Clancy, Borrisoleigh Macra, Co. Tipperary; Tom Long, Rathkeevin Macra, Co. Tipperary; Liam Coppinger, Midleton Macra, Co. Cork; and John Lonergan, Glanmire Macra, Co. Cork.

Andrew Dunne, Mountmellick Macra, Co. Laois was the only candidate for the Leinster vice-president position.

John Duffy, Three Parishes Macra, Co. Monaghan was the sole contender for Northwest vice-president.

As a result, Houlihan confirmed that both Dunne and Duffy had been deemed elected.

They will take over the roles from Patrick Jordan and Rob Lally at the Macra national annual general meeting (AGM) this May in Co. Clare.

Macra said that ballot papers will be issued to clubs throughout Ireland who are eligible to vote on March 14, with the count taking place in the Irish Farm Centre on April 4.
