Man (60s) dies in incident on farm in Leitrim

Gardaí have confirmed that a man in his 60s has died following an incident on a farm in Co. Leitrim on Tuesday (February 4).

The incident happened on a farm in the Mohill area, which is in the south of the county.

In a statement to Agriland, a garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí are investigating a fatal workplace incident that occurred on a farm in Mohill, Co. Leitrim, between 3.30pm and 8pm on Tuesday, February 4, 2025.

"A man (aged in his 60s) received fatal injuries. His body was removed to the mortuary at Sligo University Hospital for a post mortem to be conducted.

"The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) has been notified and investigations are ongoing."

The HSA has also confirmed to Agriland that it has been made aware of the incident and has launched an investigation.

There was a 40% drop in the number of work-related deaths in the agricultural sector last year, according to data from the HSA.

A total of 33 people lost their lives in work-related incidents in 2024, a reduction of almost a quarter on 2023 fatalities.

The construction sector, in particular, saw a significant decline from 10 fatalities in 2023 to five in 2024, a decline of 50%.

Meanwhile, the agriculture sector saw a decline from 20 fatalities in 2023 to 12 last year, a decrease of 40%.

Agriculture, forestry, and fishing accounted for 12 fatalities, all of which were farming incidents representing over a third of all fatalities from a sector employing just 4% of the workforce.
