Bull prices reached over €2,000 with their weight at Carnaross Mart this week.
Carnaross Mart in Co. Meath hosted its weanling and suckler sale on Tuesday, July 29, with approximately 100 lots of heifers and over 200 lots of bulls.
Speaking to Agriland after the sale, Cian McGahern from Carnaross Mart said there was a full clearance in the sale.
He added: "The strong export demand remains but there were a lot of farmers active buying cattle at the weanling sale on Tuesday night also. It was strong at both ends."
Commenting on some of the top prices in the heifer sale, McGahern said: "There was a 310kg Limousin-cross heifer that made €2,000.
Sample heifer prices from the sale:
"Another 355kg Charolais heifer sold for €2,190 and another Belgian Blue-cross heifer weighing 260kg sold for €1,620.
"A Charolais heifer weighing 275kg sold for €1,870.
"A lot of these top-price heifers were bought by farmers, but exporters were active for the heifers as well," he said.
In the bull sale, McGahern said: "Angus bulls off Friesian cows weighing 173kg sold for €1,170.
Sample prices from the bull sale:
"A Limousin-cross bull weighing 270kg made €1,750 and another 310kg Limousin bull made €1,970.
"A 370kg Charolais-cross bull made €2,280."
Heavier bulls made over €2,000 with their weight. A 455kg Limousin-cross bull sold for €2,500 and another 620kg bull sold for €2,880.
McGahern said: "Numbers in the weekly sale are now starting to rise and there are a lot of good-quality weanlings starting to come out earlier with the strong trade."
