The Irish Farmers' Association (IFA) has announced a Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) event to be held in Co. Kildare next month which will be opened by Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Martin Heydon.

The purpose of the event is to give farmers an insight into the development of the next CAP and progress on the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF).

The event – 'CAP to 2030 & Beyond' – will be held at Kilashee Hotel in Naas, Co. Kildare on Tuesday, May 13, 2025 at 7:30p.m.

Chief executive of the European farmer umbrella body COPA-Cogeca, Elli Tsiforou and Tassos Haniotis, who has had high level involvement on previous CAP programmes in the EU Commission, will bring their high-level perspectives from Brussels along with IFA Brussels director Liam MacHale.

IFA president, Francie Gorman said the next CAP faces unprecedented challenges due primarily to geopolitical circumstances.

“[The] IFA believes that the CAP has to be properly funded and must focus on supporting food production," Gorman said.

"That was its primary ambition when it was founded. However, trying to meet too many objectives has diluted the core aim of the CAP and its value to farmers.

“The policy framework that determines how CAP works for farming in Ireland is critical to the future of the sector. This event will look at the background to CAP and the current issues that will be part of the negotiations that will play out between now and the end of 2026."

Gorman explained that Ireland will hold the EU presidency for the second half of 2026, which he has described as a crucial time period for the talks.

Pre-registration for the event in Co. Kildare on May 13 will be required.
