Met Éireann: 'Good drying conditions' for most of coming week

Met Éireann said that mostly dry and sunny weather is expected across the country over the next seven days.

As a result, the national meteorological service said that conditions for drying will be good for much of the coming week, particularly on Thursday and Friday away from the showers.

With mostly light or moderate winds, there will also be some good opportunities for spraying, in general, away from the showers.

Last week was wetter than normal for this time of year in many parts of the country, especially in the east where up to 450% times the average amount of rain was recorded.

Casement Aerodrome, Co. Dublin recorded the most rain with 67mm, while Gurteen, Co. Tipperary recorded the lowest amount with 8.4mm.

Met Éireann said that the coming week will be drier than normal for much of the country with 10mm or less expected widely, which is half of the average or below.

However, some showers will occur, most likely in southern and Atlantic coastal counties.

It is expected to continue to be warmer than normal over the coming week with mean air temperatures of between 15°and 19°C expected which is 3° to 5° warmer than the average.

Mean soil temperatures are also due to increase further.

Met Éireann noted that all soils in the northern half of the country are saturated or near saturation, with poorly drained soils.

Soils are drier further south with soil moisture deficits generally between 15 and 40mm, driest soils near southern coasts.

The soil conditions will slowly improve this week, soil moisture deficits over the northern half of the country will increase to between 15 and 30mm generally, 20 to 55mm further south.

Met Éireann has also issued an advisory for potato blight with weather conditions conducive to the spread of the disease will affect southwestern, western, northwestern and northern coastal counties at times from today (Wednesday June 18) to Monday (June 23).
