Met Éireann issues Status Yellow warning for 'dense fog'

Met Éireann has issued a Status Yellow weather warning for heavy fog across the country for tonight (Monday, January 20).

The national meteorological service areas of dense fog developing, leading to impaired visibility and potentially hazardous travelling conditions.

The warning, which is valid from 8:00p.m today until 11:00a.m on Tuesday (January 21), currently applies to all counties.

The weather forecast shows that tonight it will be cloudy across Munster and south Leinster with outbreaks of rain and drizzle spreading from the southwest.

It will be drier elsewhere with clear spells and scattered showers. Mist and fog will develop again, turning dense in places.

Lowest overnight temperatures of 0° to 5°C are expected in a light southerly or variable breeze.

On Tuesday morning, the mist and fog will slowly clear to leave a dry day in many parts with sunny spells and scattered showers. Highest temperatures of 5° to 9°, with a light southwest or variable breeze.

Earlier today, Met Éireann issued a weather advisory for the entire country as it continues to track “a deepening low-pressure system”.

On Thursday night (January 23) and during Friday (January 24), this weather system is forecast to track close to Ireland.

As a result, the national forecaster has said that very strong winds are likely across the country with the potential for damaging wind gusts and disruption in places.

This will be combined with spells of heavy rain and high seas which are also expected.

Met Éireann said that it is continuously monitoring the evolving situation and weather warnings will be issued as confidence in the forecast track and intensity of the low-pressure system improves.
