Met Éireann has issued a Status Yellow wind warning for the weekend for counties: Clare, Galway, Mayo, Sligo, Leitrim and Donegal.

The warning will come into place from 3:00a.m on Saturday (December 21) and remain in place until Sunday (December 22).

The national forecaster has warned of sustained strong and gusty westerly winds veering northwesterly coupled with large coastal waves.

Potential impacts include waves overtopping and/or sraying, along with fallen trees. Met Éireann has also warned of difficult travelling conditions, especially near coastal areas.

The Met Office in the UK has also issued a Status Yellow weather warning for wind in parts of Northern Ireland for the weekend.

It has said that a period of strong winds on Saturday (December 21) is likely to lead to some transport disruption.

The weather warning affects counties Antrim, Down, Fermanagh, Tyrone and Derry and will come into effect at 7:00a.m on Saturday and last until midnight on Saturday night.

Rain will spread across the country from tomorrow, Friday (December 20), with sunshine and scattered showers to follow, becoming isolated later. Temperatures will range between 8° and 11°.

Saturday will be a windy day and will start out damp or wet with outbreaks of rain clearing quickly southwards during the morning. Afternoon highs will range 6° to 10° generally but up to 11° in southern coastal parts.

Fresh to strong and gusty westerly winds, will reach gale force along western and northern coasts with spray and/or wave overtopping possible. The showers will be hit and miss but some temporary accumulations are possible where they do fall.

It will be very windy to begin on Sunday, with blustery showers that are fairly widespread early on, some of them heavy and wintry with a mix of rain, hail, sleet and possibly some snow.
