Met Éireann has said that it will become colder in the coming days, with more unsettled conditions later in the week bringing the possibility of very strong winds and heavy rain.
The national forecaster has said that there will be some dense areas of fog initially today (Monday, January 20).
The fog will gradually clearing through the morning to leave a mostly dry day with hazy sunny spells and well scattered showers.
Remaining cloudy across the south and east with patchy light rain and drizzle, which will clear later. Highest temperatures of 7° to 10°C in a light variable breeze.
A Status Yellow weather warning for pockets of dense fog has been issued for Cavan; Monaghan; Munster; Connacht; Longford; Louth; Meath; Offaly and Westmeath until 12:00p.m today
The fog will linger in places leading to impaired visibility and hazardous travelling conditions.
Cloudy in Munster and south Leinster tonight with rain and drizzle extending from the southwest. It will be drier elsewhere with clear spells and scattered showers.
There will be further patches of mist and fog, turning dense in places. Lowest temperatures of 0° to 5° in a light southerly or variable breeze.
Weather
On Tuesday morning, the mist and fog will slowly clear to leave a dry day in many parts with sunny spells and scattered showers. Highest temperatures of 5° to 9°, with a light southwest or variable breeze.
It will be mainly dry on Tuesday night with clear spells and some scattered showers, mostly in the west and north.
Mist and fog will develop again, with some dense pockets possible in a light southerly or variable breeze. Some frost patches developing too with lowest temperatures of -1° to +3°.
Once the mist and fog have cleared, Wednesday will be a bright day with sunny spells and scattered showers. Light to moderate northwesterly breezes and highest afternoon temperatures of 5° to 8°.
Dry at first on Wednesday night, but cloud will build from the west bringing showery outbreaks of rain which will extend eastwards. The southerly winds will increase moderate to fresh in lowest temperatures of 1° to 4°.
Widespread rain on Thursday morning will clear to scattered showers and sunny spells later in the day, with a chance of hail. It will be blustery in moderate to fresh westerly winds and highest temperatures of 5° to 9°.
Met Éireann noted that there is “some uncertainty” around the weather forecast for Friday.
The current indications suggest that it will be very windy with heavy rain at first, possibly turning to sleet or snow locally. The rain will clear to sunshine and showers during the day.
It is expected to remain very unsettled at the weekend with strong winds and the potential for further heavy rainfall.
Met Éireann
Met Éireann said that low rainfall amounts are expected over the next few days, before conditions become more unsettled towards the end of the week.
As a result, rainfall amounts are expected to be above average across much of the country over the coming week.
It will be relatively mild until the middle of the week when it will turn colder. Mean air temperatures are forecast to be around average for January.
Met Éireann said that soil temperatures are currently running above average nationwide by between 2° and 3°.
Most soils across the country are currently either saturated or waterlogged. Some slight improvements are expected over the coming days, but will deteriorate later next week in more unsettled conditions.
