Met Éireann: Unsettled week ahead with rain and showers

Met Éireann has said that the weather over the coming week will be unsettled with rain and showers expected each day.

The forecast shows that there will be scattered showers and some sunny spells at first this morning (Monday, May 26).

It will become cloudy and wet as the day progresses with outbreaks of rain pushing eastwards across the country. The rain will turn heavy at times in the late afternoon and evening.

Highest temperatures of 11° to 15°C in a moderate to fresh southwest to west wind, strong at times on Atlantic coasts.

The rain will clear from the east tonight and will be followed by clear spells and scattered showers in the northern half of the country.

More rain will arrive in the southwest later in the night. Overnight lows of 6° to 11° with moderate to fresh westerly winds, becoming southerly and light overnight.

Tuesday morning will be wet as the rain extends across the country, the rain will clear eastwards in the afternoon.

Highest temperatures of 10° to 14° in the northern half of the country, with light variable winds, and 14° to 18° further south with moderate to fresh westerly winds.

There will be scattered showers on Tuesday night with a mixture of cloud and clear spells. Mist and patches of fog may form. Lowest temperatures of 5° to 11°, feeling coldest in the north, with light to moderate westerly or variable winds.

Some sunny spells and scattered showers at first on Wednesday, but cloud will increase bringing rain to most of the country by the afternoon.

The light to moderate westerly winds will become southerly in highest daytime temperatures of 13° to 16°.

Wednesday night will be breezy and wet with rain followed by showers. Lowest temperatures of 10° to 13° in fresh south to southwest winds.

It will be breezy and blustery on Thursday with sunny spells and scattered showers. Highest temperatures of 13° to 17°.

After a dry start on Friday, rain will push into southern areas. There will be light to moderate southerly breezes and top temperatures of 14° to 16°.

The current forecast suggests that the unsettled weather will continue for the June Bank Holiday weekend with spells of rain and showers.

In its outlook, Met Éireann said that rainfall amounts of 30 to 60mm are currently forecast for this week due to weather fronts moving in over the country from the Atlantic.

This corresponds to between 150 and 350% of average for this time of the year, with the highest totals expected in the west and north.

It will be cooler by day, but many of the nights will feel milder. Mean air temperatures will range from 12° to 14°, which is 1° to 2° above average. Soil temperatures will continue well above average.

Drying conditions will be poor over the coming days due to spells of rain and showers. Spraying opportunities will also be limited due to changeable and unsettled conditions.

Met Éireann said that soil moisture deficits are above 40mm in many areas, meaning that growth is increasingly restricted.

Those values are expected to recover over the coming week but this will depend on location.

Some soils may become saturated in parts of the northwest and southwest. Soil moisture deficits will remain around 40mm or above in parts of the south and southeast.
