Met Éireann: Weather warning issued with rainfall to be 'above normal'

Met Éireann is warning that rainfall amounts are forecast "to be above normal nationwide, with many areas seeing 1.5 to 2 times the average" in the week ahead.

The national meteorological service has also issued a status yellow rain warning for three counties for today (Monday, June 2).

The weather warning will come into effect for Galway, Mayo, Kerry from 2pm today until 10pm tonight.

Met Éireann has said that there is likely to be "heavy rain with very strong, gusty southerly winds near the coast" this afternoon and evening.

It has also advised that this could result in localised flooding, poor visibility and difficult travelling conditions.

The latest national forecast outlines that it will be dry this morning with "plenty of sunshine".

However rain is set to start in the west this afternoon and will likely spread eastwards through the evening, "turning heavy with spot flooding possible".

According to Met Éireann it is then likely to becoming rather windy with southwesterly breezes increasing fresh to strong with gales along Atlantic coasts later this afternoon.

It has said highest temperatures will be in the region of 13° to 18°.

Tonight is also likely to be wet to begin, with widespread rain, but this will gradually clear, developing into scattered showers later - lowest temperatures are likely to be around 6° to 10°.

Met Éireann has forecast a mix of "sunshine and showers" with breezy conditions for tomorrow (Tuesday, June 3) with highest temperatures expected to be between 12° to 16°.

It is likely to "coolest in the west and northwest in moderate to fresh and gusty westerly winds", the meteorological service has also advised that showers will continue overnight but there may also be some clear spells.

It expects that lowest temperatures will be in the region of 7° to 10° and there will be light to moderate southwest winds.

The outlook for Wednesday is for another day of sunny spells and scattered showers.

However Met Éireann expects that it will be come cloudier for a time in the west and southwest.

It has also advised that it will feel "cool with highest temperatures of 11° to 16° in moderate to fresh westerly winds".

Showers in some parts of the country will linger as night falls but conditions could improve with some with clear spells.

It is also likely that outbreaks of light rain will develop in southern areas later in the night, with the national meteorological service expecting lowest temperatures of 6° to 10°.

By Thursday the outbreaks of rain will clear around the southeast coast through the afternoon while there are likely to be showers and sunny spells in other parts of the country, highest temperatures could also be in the region of 13° to 16°, with moderate westerly winds.

Towards the end of the week conditions are expected to be "mostly cloudy" and Met Éireann has warned that showers could merge "to longer spells of rain at times" on Friday. It expects that highest temperatures will range from 12 °to 16°.

Overall the current forecast is that the weather in many parts of the county will continue to be "unsettled with rain or showers each day, and blustery conditions at times".

Farmers are advised to note that "drying will be limited" and that there will be "limited opportunities for spraying this week".
