The government today (Tuesday, July 22) unveiled a revised National Development Plan (NDP) which will see a total investment of €275.4 billion from 2026 to 2035.
The Taoiseach, Micheál Martin, said it reflects the government's ambition "to support a growing population, meet our climate goals, and ensure that every part of Ireland can thrive".
A total €102.4 billion has been allocated to government departments for 2026-2030 as part of Exchequer ceilings within the NDP.
The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) has been allocated "€1,625 million" while the Department of Rural and Community Development will receive "€1,329 million".
Over the coming months, ministers will "set out their priority programmes and projects" that they intend to spend the money on.
According to the government, it has "prioritised increased investment levels in water, energy, transport and housing" in the revised NDP.
In addition to the Exchequer allocations, €10 billion in equity funding has been provided for the period 2026 to 2030 to "support the delivery of large projects in the water, energy and transport sectors".
This includes:
According to the government "across all sources, including the NDP investment, a total of €12 billion has been released and earmarked specifically for critical water infrastructure investment".
As part of the NDP review process, government departments were "asked to identify any projects within their NDP bids which would meet the criteria for designated environmental projects", and which they would be seeking funding for through the Infrastructure, Climate and Nature Fund (ICNF).
The ICNF was set up last July and one of the key aims for it is to "assist with climate change objectives and with addressing nature, water quality and biodiversity issues".
According to the latest NDP, "it will now be a matter for the relevant ministers to commence the formal process for designating the environmental projects that they intend to fund via their allocations from the ICNF".
