New chair of IFA Pigs and Pigmeat Committee elected

Michael Caffrey, a pig farmer from Cavan, has been elected chair of the Irish Farmers' Association (IFA) National Pigs and Pigmeat Committee.

The election took place during the committee's first meeting of the year at the Irish Farm Centre this week.

He formally takes over the role at the IFA annual general meeting (AGM) next week from Roy Gallie, who has concluded his term.

Michael Caffrey brings a wealth of experience and deep knowledge of the pig farming sector to the position.

The IFA has said that with years of hands-on expertise and a firm commitment to representing the interests of pig farmers nationwide, he aims to address the challenges within the sector during his tenure.

Speaking after his election, Michael Caffrey said: “I look forward to working closely with farmers, sector stakeholders, and policymakers to fight for the needs of pig farmers, who are facing unprecedented challenges, including increased regulations in areas such as environmental standards; trade policies; sustainability; and animal welfare.

"These challenges impact on family farms, where increased costs are often not adequately covered by the marketplace.

"I am committed to ensuring that these issues are addressed and that the voices of all pig farmers are heard," he added.

Caffrey also thanked his predecessor Roy Gallie for his dedication and leadership during his term.
