Over €8m funding for 650 historic buildings

Minister of State for nature, heritage, and biodiversity, Christopher O’Sullivan, has announced the list of over 650 projects to be awarded funding under the Built Heritage Investment Scheme (BHIS) 2025.

The scheme supports property owners to conserve and enhance historic buildings and streetscapes, and at the same time preserve and develop traditional building skills.

This year’s grants will be used to repair, restore, and protect historic structures from modest traditional homes to landmark public buildings.

In addition to the funding provided under BHIS, owners and custodians will themselves commit an estimated €29.5 million to these projects from private sources.

€1.25 million of the €8.1 million total will be allocated to thatched buildings. This consists of €600,000 from the dedicated Historic Thatched Buildings stream, and an additional €650,000 awarded from the main stream of the BHIS.

Outside of Dublin the three counties to receive the most funding were Cork, Tipperary, and Limerick receiving a combined €1,118,365.

Some of the funding allocations include the following:

In Westmeath, the old Post Office in Drumcree, Collinstown, will receive €17,500 to carry out repairs to the thatched roof.

In Carlow, the Old Rectory in Killedmond just outside Borris, is to receive €10,000 for window and door repairs.

On Goala island, 1km off the coast of Co. Donegal, €7,000 was granted to 'Friels house' for windows, doors and associated elements.

"In maintaining and caring for our historic buildings, owners and custodians perform a valuable public service, and I am delighted to be able to support their efforts."
