The Irish Hereford Breed Society held its Spring Show and Sale in Nenagh last Saturday, April 8, where bulls reached an average price of €3,100.
Some 21 bulls, a considerable drop from the 41 entered, were on offer as farmers continued to focus on selling bulls from their own yards.
But, despite the fall off in numbers, buyers dug in deep and paid €2,350-3,700 for bulls on the day – this resulted in a 95% clearance rate.
The champion bull, Kye Harry 734, owned by Padraig McGrath sold for €3,600 and was purchased by John Jones from Co. Wexford.

Frank Harrington’s F.H. Star took the rosette for Reserve Champion and sold to Barney O’Sullivan from Co. Wicklow for €3,400.

However, the top price on the day went to Rory Farrell’s Ballinveney Superstar. The bull was purchased by Nelson McCrabble from Co. Donegal for €3,700.

Bulls break the €3,000 barrier
A number of other bulls also broke the €3,000 barrier last Saturday.
Philip Smyth’s Ardmulchan Lunar sold for €3,650. The son of Church Preen Galileo was purchased by Patrick Lane from Co. Limerick.

John Canty offered Portanob Brutus on the day and the son of Balleen Revival was purchased by Michael Mulcahy from Nenagh at €3,000.

Nigel Heatrick’s bull, Glaslough Red Rum, was another one to break the €3,000 barrier. The son of Ballyaville Ger was purchased by James Kavanagh from Co. Wicklow for €3,050.

Judging on the day was carried out by Adrian Bateman from Co. Cork and the society will hold its next sale in Kilmallock on April 21.
