Power restoration work nearing completion 2 weeks on from storm

Under 700 homes, farms, and businesses will remain without power overnight as ESB Networks nears completion of restoration work following Storm Éowyn over two weeks ago.

The ESB has restored power to over 767,000 homes, farms, schools, and businesses as of this evening (Sunday, February 9). Following "significant" repairs carried out over the weekend, work is continuing into the night.

The day after Storm Éowyn saw some 768,000 premises without power.

For those customers remaining without power overnight, work will continue to reconnect these customers from first light tomorrow (Monday, February 10), ESB Networks said.

The utility company anticipates that pockets of customers, mainly in parts of Co. Roscommon, north Co. Galway, Co. Mayo, and south Co. Leitrim will be out overnight.

Their estimated restoration times will be updated to reflect this over the course of the evening. If customers are in a position to, they are recommend to check www.PowerCheck.ie for further details.

Given the extensive damage to the electricity network and the volume of repairs completed, ESB Networks is asking that, if customers have not previously reported loss of power, to do so immediately on 1800 372 999.

The public should remain vigilant to the possibility of unidentified low-hanging wires and should these be encountered, they should keep away and report them immediately.

An elderly farmer from Co. Galway was rushed to Portiuncula University Hospital in Ballinasloe, Co. Galway, on Thursday evening (February 6), after being without heat or power in the aftermath of Storm Éowyn.

Joe Sheridan, a former Fianna Fáil councillor for Tuam, Co. Galway, said that the farmer had underlying health conditions, and lived in a house that was heated by a small fire.

The farmer was found by one of his friends, a retired man who was helping him on his farm.

According to Sheridan, “we were caught on the hop, nationally, regionally, and locally” by the storm.
