Farmers and Angus cattle breed enthusiasts from far and wide gathered at Fennor Farm in Co. Westmeath today (Saturday, April 19) for the annual Gigginstown House Angus Sale.
The sale was hosted in conjunction with Ballyjamesduff Mart in Co. Cavan with online bidding available through the MartEye app.
While herd owner Micheal O'Leary was absent from the sale, farm manager Joe O'Mahoney was present on the rostrum alongside auctioneer Tommy Harrisson and Ballyjamesduff Mart's John Tevlin.
The Gigginstown Angus sale policy of selling without a reserve price was well rewarded with the average price of the 22 bulls offered in the sale settling at an impressive €5,323.
The pedigree Angus bulls and heifers sold to the four provinces of Ireland with buyers from Cork to Donegal securing Gigginstown Angus progeny at the event and four bulls purchased by customers from Northern Ireland.
First to enter the sale ring on the day was the bulls and taking the top price was Lot 20 Gigginstown Enough Of That Z804, selling for €7,750.
This five-star bull had a replacement value of €155 and was sired by Drumcrow Twenty Twenty.
Selling at €7,450 was Lot 15, a red Angus bull. Gigginstown Red Apostle Z654 was sired by Gigginstown Red Blackjack and had a five-star replacement index across breed valued at €131.
Lot numbers five and six were two bulls bred off the same sire and both sold for €7,300. Gigginstown Thunder and Roses Z759 and Gigginstown Bronco KBJ Z756 were both sired by Stouphill Master Prince and were both born in September 2023 to separate Gigginstown-bred dams.
Both bulls had a five-star terminal index within breed valued at €110 and €102 respectively.
Next to enter the sale ring was the in-calf heifers, and while all bulls offered for sale were haltered, the heifers were loose penned.
There were 14 in-calf heifers offered in the sale, meeting an average sale price of €4,900.
The in-calf heifers were all approximately four months in calf to the following range of sires:
Selling at €6,800 was Lot 33, Gigginstown Kim Rocket, the top-priced in-calf Angus heifer in the sale. This Liss Martin-sired heifer sold as in-calf to Gigginstown Lord Belvin.
The final in-calf heifer into the ring was Gigginstown Rose Erica. This heifer sold for €6,550 in calf to Lemonfield Pragmatic. The heifer was sired by Drumcrow Twenty Twenty.
There were six maiden heifers offered on the day and these were last to enter the sale ring. It was the last animal to enter the ring, Lot 45 Gigginstown Tribal Kim, that took the top maiden heifer price of €5,050. This heifer was sired by Mogeely Dram.
The average sale price for the maiden heifers was €4,430.
Prices in the sale ranged from tops of €7,750 for the bulls to €3,500 at the lower-end of the price scale for in-calf heifers in the sale.
Farm manager, Joe O’Mahoney thanked all supporters, purchasers, and sponsors who "contributed to another very successful sale in 2025".
Speaking to Agriland after the sale, Ballyjamesduff Mart's John Tevlin said: "It was a wonderful sale and the Angus are continuing to outperform all other breeds at the moment.
"It's a busy weekend for Ballyjamesduff Mart as we are also running a timed auction featuring 72 lots of embryos this weekend on the MartEye app", he said.
