Record prices achieved at Carnew dairy sale

Carnew dairy sale, along with other sales held this week, saw the demand for dairy stock remaining high, judging by the latest prices paid in marts.

Speaking with one mart manager this week they stated: ''The latest issues with some co-ops has certainly not dampened the trade for dairy females.''

Carnew Mart held the clearance sale of 100 head for Mrs. Brenda Crean last Tuesday, April 6. The herd of high economic breeding index (EBI), artificial insemination (AI) bred cows, mainly consisted of freshly-calved second and third calvers.

The herd was in the top 10% of Glanbia suppliers for milk solids/cow/year. Before the sale, the herd was averaging 34L/cow at 3.37%protein and 4.52%fat, with an average somatic cell count (SCC) of 76,000.

Speaking about the sale, David Quinn, the mart’s manager, stated: ''We saw an excellent herd of cows selling to record price for the mart, with a second calver selling at a top price of €3,600.

''The remaining 40, second, third and fourth calved cows averaged €2,500 with the heifer calves selling to top price of €600.''
