SETU recruiting staff for new veterinary medicine course

South East Technological University (SETU) is currently recruiting staff for its new veterinary medicine course.

The university is seeking a fulltime permanent lecturer in veterinary medicine focused on farm animals.

SETU said that the overall objective of this lecturer position is to contribute to the design, development and delivery of the veterinary medicine undergraduate programme in the School of Science and Computing.

The new veterinary medicine course, based at SETU's Waterford campus, will be delivered in conjunction with Teagasc Kildalton Agricultural College.

The programme is due to be made available for the CAO listing for 2025/2026, with an annual intake of 40 students from September 2026.

"The appointee will play an active role in the academic direction of courses including teaching, research, academic assessment and academic administration," the job listing outlined.

Candidates must have a relevant veterinary medicine qualification and a postgraduate qualification in farm animal or a veterinary related area.

They should also have at least 5 years post-qualification clinical experience in farm animal/mixed veterinary practice.

The gross salary scale for this lecturer position ranges from €67,577 to €104,559/year.

SETU is also currently recruiting for a technical officer for its veterinary medicine programme.

The overall objective of this post is to provide technical support to staff and undergraduate veterinary medicine students during animal handling and clinical skills practical teaching sessions.

The successful candidate will help lecturers, Teagasc Kildalton farm staff and undergraduate students with the safe movement of large animals and operation of handling equipment.

The technical officer will be required to travel between the SETU Cork road campus and TeagascKildalton Agricultural College as part of their role.

The gross salary scale for this post is €44,744 – €74,742/year.

The closing date for applications for both positions is April 14, 2025.

In September, the government confirmed that two new vet schools would be located at SETU and Atlantic Technological University (ATU).

Last month, ATU said that its new bachelor of veterinary medicine and surgery (BVMS) course will not begin until September 2026.

Last year, the university said it hoped to commence the course in September 2025.
