Storm Floris advisory issued for Bank Holiday Monday

Met Éireann has issued an advisory notice in relation to a storm which is due to descend on the country on Bank Holiday Monday (August 4).

Storm Floris is forecast to bring wet and unseasonably windy weather during Sunday night and the public holiday on Monday.

Some potential impacts include:

  • Dangerous travelling conditions;
  • Knock-on impacts for outdoor events;
  • Structural damage;
  • Fallen trees, debris and loose objects;
  • Power outages;
  • Wave overtopping;
  • Localised flooding due to leaves.

The advisory storm notice is relevant to all counties according to the national forecaster and further updates will be provided by Met Éireann tomorrow as the storm draws closer.

Regarding today's (Friday, August 1) most areas will be dry with just isolated showers - mainly across Ulster and north Leinster.

Sunny spells will gradually break through as the day goes on. Highest temperatures will range from 16°C to 21° in a mostly light north-west breeze.

It will be dry tonight under broken cloud. Later tonight, the odd spot of drizzle may show up along the Atlantic seaboard.

It will be a little cooler than recent nights with lowest temperatures of 7° to 13° in just light variable breezes.

Much of the eastern half of the country will stay fully dry on Saturday with warm spells of sunshine. Becoming cloudier elsewhere though with some rain and drizzle slowly developing, mainly in west and north-west areas.

The odd heavy burst may occur later. Highest temperatures will range between 17° and 23° in a light to moderate south-west breeze.

Saturday night will be cloudy with outbreaks of light rain and drizzle at first. More persistent rain developing in the west and spreading across the country through the night.

Some clear spells and scattered showers will follow in the north and west by morning. Lowest temperatures of 13° to 17° are expected with a moderate south-west to west wind.

Cloud and rain will clear from the south-east on Sunday morning and for the rest of the day there will be a good amount of dry and bright weather, with just a few showers in the north-west.

Cloud will slowly build from the south-west through the evening. Highest temperatures will range from 16° to 20° with a moderate to fresh westerly wind, easing later.

It will turn wet and windy Sunday night as rain spreads from the west accompanied by fresh and gusty winds. Lowest temperatures of 12° to 15° are expected.

Meanwhile, Met Éireann has also issued a blight advisory for Munster, Donegal and Connacht.

Weather conditions conducive to the spread of potato blight will develop in parts of Munster, Connacht and western Ulster from Saturday evening, August 2 to Sunday afternoon August 3.
