A group of more than 80 people are getting ready to tackle one of Ireland's highest peaks, outside of Kerry, tomorrow (Friday, June 20) to raise thousands of euro for a national charity as part of the Tirlán Mountain Challenge 2025.
The group taking part in the Tirlán charity hike will attempt the 925 metre Lugnaquilla Mountain or Lug as it’s often known, in Co. Wicklow and in the process encourage supporters to try and raise €25,000 in the single day challenge.
The fund-raising climb is to support the work of Aware, the national organisation providing free support, education and information services to people impacted by anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder and related mood conditions.
The money raised from the Tirlán Mountain Challenge 2025 will also help to finance Aware's support line at Freephone – 1800 804 848.
Dr. Lisa Koep, chief environmental, social and governance officer at Tirlán, will be taking part in the challenge tomorrow.
Dr. Koep said: “As we climb Lugnaquilla, we’ll be thinking of those who face personalmountains every day.
"Their strength inspires us, and we’re proud to support our charity partner Aware in their mission to provide assistance.”
This is not the first year that the Tirlán Mountain Challenge has taken place, it is according to the co-op a "long-running key fundraising event" and a part of its commitment to give back to its communities.
According to Tirlán in 2024, the Mountain Challenge raised €40,000 from a two day climb in Connemara.
James Brennan, organiser for the Tirlán Mountain Challenge said: “Our team has been training hard and is ready to take on Lugnaquilla.
"We’re grateful for the support we’ve received so far and encourage everyone in the Tirlán community to help us reach our fundraising goal.”
Meanwhile Stephen Butterly, the CEO of Aware, also said: “Support from organisations like Tirlán not only funds our services but also helps break the stigma around mental health.
"These efforts start conversations and make a real difference.”
