Top price of €13,200 at Keltic 'Classy Lassies' sale

The Keltic Limousin Herd, based in Co. Meath and run by Teleri Thomas and Mac Murphy, hosted an online timed auction of Limousin heifers which drew to a close on Sunday, July 14.

The sale featured 14 purebred Limousin heifers. This year's sale - which took place in association with MartEye and Mid Tipperary Co-operative Livestock Mart (Thurles Mart) - marked the third-ever production sale hosted by the herd.

Taking the top price in the sale was Lot 4, Keltic Te Kanawa, a September-2022-born heifer that is the only female ever to be sold from Jacaranda, dam of Seimon that took the top price at the Elphin Premier in 2023 and Pax that took the top price in the 2021 Athenry sale.

Sired by Ampertaine Majestic (LM5154), this heifer was served to Scorpion (LM1109) in January and sold for €13,200.

The second-highest price went to Lot 8, Keltic Vitality, a January-2024-born heifer sired by Nebbiolo (LM3713).

Described in the online sale catalogue as "a much admired heifer out of a muscly Commander cow from the best cow family in the herd", she sold for €12,200.

The third-highest price in the sale went to Lot 5, Keltic Ursina, an April-2023-born homozygous polled heifer sired by Lorenzo Pp (LM9812) and its dam was Keltic Magnolia P.

This heifer was served to Loyal (LM4184) in January this year and sold for €9,400.

Selling at €8,100 was Lot 9, Keltic Uqueen a March-2023-born heifer in the top 5% for milk and the top 1% for terminal traits.

The heifer was sired by Hector Gd (LM7428) and was described in the catalogues as "from a very milky Bavardage cow". This heifer was also served to Tomschoice Scorpion last December.

Selling at €8,000 was Keltic Venetia, an April 2024-born heifer sired by Keltic Rembrandt (LM8259) .

In the top 5% of the breed for maternal, milk and terminal traits, this heifers' dam Nepeta was described as "the milkiest cow in the herd at +13.5 kg".
