TUS project aiming to support farmers for sustainable future

The Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) is encouraging farmers in Co. Offaly to take part in a research project looking at how best to support them in adapting to a more sustainable future.

The project is part of the Just Transition Academy’s work on regenerative agriculture and its aim is to design supports to help meet challenges ahead– whether that’s training, information evenings, or help building off-farm income.

Although the project will be led by TUS, it is funded through the EU Just Transition Fund (JTF) and is being done in partnership with Offaly Local Development Company (OLDC) and Laois Offaly Education and Training Board (LOETB).

The research and development officer at TUS, Bill Casey said: "The end of Bord na Móna’s peat operations has brought big changes to the Midlands – especially here in Offaly. For years, Bord na Móna wasn’t just a workplace, it was a vital part of rural life.

"Many farmers depended on seasonal work with the company to supplement farm incomes and keep things ticking over."

“As Offaly moves towards more sustainable land use and green energy, there’s growing recognition that farmers need real, practical support to adapt to these changes and secure a strong future for their farms and families. That is why we need farmers help with this project,” Casey added.

TUS is asking farmers to come forward and take part in a short anonymous survey looking at the main pressures of the farm and areas where support is needed.

This feedback will directly shape future workshops, training and information events on areas including financial planning, environmental schemes, organic conversion, solar panels and regenerative agriculture.

Casey said: “(This) will help make sure supports are practical, local, and relevant to your needs.
