The president of the European Commission has vowed to continue honouring the Paris Climate Change Agreement and work with “all nations” that want to protect nature and stop global warming.
Ursula von der Leyen was speaking today (Tuesday, January 21) at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
The Paris Agreement is a legally binding international treaty that aims to reduce global warming and tackle the impact of climate change.
During his inaugural address yesterday, US President Donald Trump promised to pull out of it. Today Ursula von der Leyen said climate change is still on top of the global agenda, according to EuroParlRadio.
"From decarbonising, to nature-based solutions, from building a circular economy, to developing nature credits, the Paris Agreement continues to be the best hope for all humanity, von der Leyen told the forum.
"So Europe will stay the course and keep working with all nations that want to protect nature and stop global warming."
Von der Leyen has also said that the world has entered a new era of "harsh geostrategic competition".
"Breaking the bonds in the global economy is in no one’s interest. Europe will keep seeking cooperation. With our long-time friends. And any country we share interests with," she added.
Meanwhile, the EU Trade Commissioner says the US decision to withdraw from the Paris Climate Change Agreement is regrettable.
Speaking in the European Parliament today, EuroParlRadio reports that Maros Sefcovic reiterated the EU’s intention to “stay the course” and continue to implement the deal.
"The EU regrets the decision by the United States to withdraw from the Paris Agreement, which we believe continues to be the best hope for us all," Sefcovic said.
"For more than a decade, we have worked side by side with our American friends to design and implement the Paris Agreement.
"Companies in both Europe and America are investing in climate action, in clean technologies and in bringing their benefits to the citizens," Sefcovic added.
