The weather forecast for the coming week indicates that it will be generally dry with light winds but it will also be cold, with frost, ice and possible fog and it’s expected to turn more showery later this week.
According to Met Éireann, frost will clear today, Monday, December 9 to leave a mostly dry day with low winter sunshine occurring widely, as the country recovers from Storm Darragh.
It will be cloudier however across east Leinster with a few showers feeding in off the Irish Sea. It will be coldest across the western half of the country with highest afternoon temperatures of 5° to 9°C, in light to moderate north-easterly breezes.
Tonight will be cold and dry with a slight to sharp frost, along with some areas of fog. Lowest temperatures will range from -3° to +2° generally, in a light north-east wind.
Overnight frost and fog will clear from most areas on Tuesday, possibly lingering across north-west areas however in near calm.
Where fog clears, it will be dry with spells of low winter sunshine and it will be cold with highest temperatures of 2° to 5° generally, though more like 6° to 8° across east and south-east areas.
Weather for rest of week
Tomorrow Tuesday will be dry and calm with a widespread sharp frost and icy stretches with areas of fog too and lowest temperatures of -3° to 0°.
Wednesday will be dry but generally quite dull with overnight mist and fog stubborn to clear some areas.
It will be cold with highest temperatures 1° to 6°, coldest across the western half of the country, in a light north-east breeze. Another calm, cold and frosty night is expected to follow with widespread fog and lowest temperatures of -3° to 0°.
On Thursday, once again frost and fog will linger in some areas throughout. It will remain dry and calm but generally cloudy. It will be cold with highest temperatures of 2° to 7°, again coldest across Atlantic counties.
A few well scattered showers will follow overnight and it will be dry and calm but it may also be misty or foggy in places, along with frost where skies clear. Lowest temperatures are expected to range from -2° to +2°.
Friday is forecast to be dry with some bright or sunny spells overall. There will be just a few well scattered showers about, mainly across south-east areas, and later across west and north-west areas.
Highest temperatures on Friday will range from 3° to 8°, coldest across Ulster with a light to moderate westerly wind setting in.
In terms of the farming commentary from Met Éireann, all soils are currently saturated with some moderately drained soils and all poorly drained soils waterlogged.
Soils will slowly improve over the coming week due to limited rainfall amounts.
