The weather looks likely to be mainly unsettled this week, with dry spells but also periods of rain and blustery wind, according to Met Éireann.

Today (Monday, December 16) will be largely dry with some bright or sunny spells. However, there will be a few showers also, mainly in the west and north but some may travel further east later in the afternoon.

Highest temperatures will be 9° to 11° in moderate to fresh southwesterly winds.

It will become largely dry as showers die out with clear spells at first tonight. Cloud will increase from the west overnight and some rain or drizzle will develop by morning. Lowest temperatures will be 5° to 9°, in moderate to fresh southerly winds.

The weather will turn rather wet and windy tomorrow (Tuesday, December 17). After a largely dry start for most, rain will become persistent in the west and spread eastwards to all areas through the afternoon.

It will become quite windy also with fresh to strong and gusty southerly winds. Highest afternoon temperatures will be 10° to 13°.

The rain will become patchy overnight tomorrow night, clearing eastwards with scattered showers following. Lowest temperatures are expected to be 9° to 13° with fresh to strong southwesterly winds veering westerly.

It will start out fairly dry on Wednesday morning (December 18) with just showers in some places, before a spell of rain will spread across the southern half of the country in the afternoon.

Most of Connacht and Ulster will avoid the rain altogether with just showers feeding in at times. Highest temperatures will be 7° to 11° early in the afternoon with light to moderate west to northwest winds.

The rain will clear eastwards early on Wednesday night and scattered showers will follow from the west in light to moderate northwesterly winds. Lowest temperatures will be 1° to 4°.

Thursday (December 19) will be a cold, bright fresh day with sunny spells and showers, some heavy and of hail. Highest temperatures should be 5° to 9 degrees but feeling cooler in a moderate, gusty northwesterly wind.

The showers will continue in western and northern areas on Thursday night and winds will ease. It will be cold, with lowest temperatures of 1° to 5° in west to southwest winds.

The weather will start out bright with sunny spells and a few showers on Friday morning (December 20) before rain moves southeastwards across the country in the afternoon. Highest temperatures of 7° to 10° in a moderate to fresh southwest wind veering westerly and easing light to moderate as the rain clears.
