Weather update: Status Yellow wind and rainfall warning issued

Met Éireann has issued an additional weather alert to include a Status Yellow "rainfall warning" that will come into effect for seven counties tomorrow (Friday, February 21) morning.

The national meteorological service has warned that there will be "very strong and gusty southerly winds, coupled with heavy rainfall" from 4:00a.m tomorrow to 08:00a.m for Cork and Kerry.

Meanwhile there will be similar weather conditions in Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford, Wicklow, Waterford from 06:00a.m until 10:00a.m tomorrow.

According to Met Éireann the weather conditions in the seven counties could lead to:

  • Some fallen trees or branches;
  • Difficult travelling conditions;
  • Debris, loose objects displaced;
  • Localised flooding.

It also highlighted today (Thursday, February 20) that over the past week it has been two or three times wetter than average over south Munster and south Leinster.

"The wettest conditions were along southern coasts with 89.5mm recorded at Cork Airport.

"It was driest in the midlands and east with 11mm recorded at Gurteen, Co. Tipperary," the national meteorological service added.

In its latest farming commentary it advised that the coming week's weather will be unsettled, with frequent spells of rain and showers.

"The wettest conditions will be in western and southwest coastal areas with drier conditions through the midlands and east," Met Éireann.

The latest farming commentary also outlines that mean air temperatures over the past week have ranged from 10.7° in the southwest to 4.9° in the north.

According to this commentary mean soil temperatures have generally been warmer than normal, ranging from 4.5° in the northwest to 8.7° in the southwest which is between 0.7° and 3° above normal.

Met Éireann added: "During the week ahead, mean air temperatures will more widely be above normal, increasing to between 7° and 10°, which is 2 or 3 degrees above normal.

"Soil temperatures will remain above normal".

However it has also warned that drying will "generally be poor in the coming week due to frequent spells of rain and showers".
