It looks like the weekend weather forecast for much of the country will see mostly dry conditions apart from isolated showers, mostly in the west.

Met Éireann has said that it will be a cloudy start this morning (Friday, January 17) with some patchy rain over Connacht and Ulster for a time, but staying dry elsewhere.

Staying rather cloudy through to the afternoon with highest temperatures of 8°C to 11° with southerly breezes.

It will be generally dry but cloudy tonight with some patchy mist or drizzle along southern counties. Lowest temperatures of 5° to 8° are expected with southerly breezes.

Highest temperatures will range from 9° to 12°.

Saturday night will see a mix of cloud and clear spells with outbreaks of rain slowly moving in from the west over much of Munster, Connacht and west Ulster.

It will be drier and clearer further east though with a few spots of drizzle. Lowest temperatures will range from 5° to 9° generally with mostly moderate southerly winds.

On Sunday, perhaps turning slightly more unsettled with a band of rain moving in across western counties together with strengthening southerly winds.

It will be cloudy elsewhere but eastern counties should stay dry until the afternoon with highest temperatures of 9° to 12°.

On Sunday night, the last of the rain will clear the east early in the night with clear spells and some showers following. Lowest temperatures of 4° to 8° are expected in light to moderate south-west winds.

Outlook for next week

On Monday, any lingering rain will clear early but it will remain cloudy. Winds will fall light however, and highest temperatures will reach around 8° to 11°.

Current indications for Tuesday are for it to turn slightly more unsettled again with outbreaks of rain developing from the south.

Field conditions

Most soils across Ireland are either saturated or waterlogged.

There will be some marginal improvements over the coming days as it will be mainly dry, but will deteriorate through next week in more unsettled conditions.
